He was a Lauderdale County
farmer all his life, operating a 200-cow dairy from 1946 to 1970 and a
cow-calf and operation from 1971 until his death. His accomplishments
and leadership roles were many like helping organize the Lauderdale County
Cattlemen’s Association and serving on its board of directors and later
as president. With the help of county agent Charles Burns, Emory started
the North Alabama BCIA Bull Test Station 1973 and operated it until 1991.
He received the Richard Deese Award from the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement
Association in 1991 and was inducted into the Alabama Livestock Hall of
Fame in 1999. He was also a recipient of the Distinguished Cooperator
Award presented by the Alabama Council of Farmer Cooperatives in 1990.
Emory was a founder and past president of the Northwest Alabama Livestock
Auction located in Russelleville.
He has served on the State
Alabama Cattlemen’s board of directors, the Alabama Farmers Cooperative
Board of directors and the Lauderdale County Co-op board of directors.
Emory was on the board of directors for the Lauderdale County Farm Bureau,
the Soil and Water Conservation Bureau and was a Lifetime Director of the
Alabama Farmers Federation.
Emory was also heralded for his love of God and his church. He was Elder at Lone Cedar Church of Christ from 1967 until his death, served on the board of directors of Mars Hill Bible School, the University of North Alabama Student Center and the Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home. Emory was chairman of the Mars Hill Bible School Quest for Excellence Committee and received the Dedication and Service Award for 22 years of service to the Mars Hill Endowment Association.
He will be missed by all that knew him.
