40th Annual Alabama BCIA
Meeting and Awards Banquet
March 27, 2004
Wynfrey Hotel, Birmingham, Ala.
*Gold Star Cow Awards*
These are virtually the same honors as any of the dam of distinction
programs the purebred beef breed associations
have for their members. In 2001, BCIA changed the program to encompass
more management styles. By removing
the 650-pound adjusted waning weight requirement, not as much emphasis
was placed on production. However, we
do require the cow be able to produce up to the BCIA weaning weight
average. You may think BCIA gives out too
many Gold Star Awards; however, you can think of it this way: This
year, there were a maximum of 6,108 dams
eligible for the award. This year, BCIA presented 230 Gold Star Cow
Awards. This represents 3.8 percent of the dams
in production in the BCIA Commercial Records program. It is not too
difficult to have a cow be named a Gold Star
Cow the first time; however, when a cow is able to meet the criteria
13 years in a row, she is special.
