Outstanding Seedstock Producer at the Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet
Sat
. March 22, 2003 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Montgomery.
Boyd Simmental Farm, located in New Brockton, Ala. has been in operation
over 80 years. As owner and manager of the operation, Lee Boyd is an active
leader in the beef industry and his community, while producing an award-winning
herd of Simmental cattle. His wife, Harriet is a constant supporter and
helper in the operation.
Boyd Simmental Farm presently supports 125 brood cows that are bred through
artificial insemination, stretching the calving season to about four months.
The operation’s primary source of income is the sale of Black Simmental
bulls. A significant income is also earned through the sale of open and
bred heifers, cow/calf pairs and some 3-in-ones.
The cattle are fed broiler litter, corn, hay, perennial warm season pasture
and winter annual pasture. The operation produces its own hay and purchases
corn, oats, cottonseed or soy hull pellets.
The primary short-term goals of Boyd’s operation are to produce bulls with
a 205-day weight that exceeds 600 lbs. and heifers that that are over 500
lbs. at day 205. In addition, the operation strives to wean a 95% calf
crop and to produce purebred cattle that are structurally sound and heavy
muscled with a good disposition.
To gain recognition as a leader in the Simmental industry, Boyd makes a
strong effort to consistently produce what commercial and purebred producers
are seeking to improve their herd.
Boyd has been a member and utilized BCIA records since 1985. In addition,
Boyd implements the Simmental record keeping and numbering system.
The operation qualified as a Soil Conservation Water Shed project last
year and with the help of Soil Conservation, Boyd fenced and cross-fenced
240 acres, putting a rotational system at one portion of the farm.
Boyd has served as president of the Wiregrass Polled Hereford Association
and the Coffee County Cattlemen’s Association. He was named regional vice-president
of the ACA and director both the Wiregrass Polled Hereford Association
and the Alabama Simmental Association. Boyd was also awarded a lifetime
appointment to the Coffee County Cattlemen’s Board.
Boyd is also an active leader in his community, serving on the Coffee County
Extension Council and the Coffee County Farm City Council. In addition,
he is an ALFA director and Soil Conservation supervisor. Boyd is a 4-H
Livestock volunteer and sponsors the 4-H Steer and Heifer Show in Coffee
County.
Boyd will represent Alabama as the Outstanding Seedstock Producer of the
Year at the Beef Improvement Federation Convention in Lexington, Ky. May
28-31.
